About Me
Born in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1940’s, my earliest memories are of living in post-war suburban housing in a diverse community next to salt flats. I was transplanted to the Central Valley in the early 1950’s (into 114 degree heat!). In elementary school, I was selected to attend special weekend art classes which encouraged me to pursue the arts. I was introduced to the use of oil paints when my mother came home one day with some paint by number kits. Soon I began “painting outside the lines”.
My high school art teachers were disappointed when I chose Fresno State University over an art college. At Fresno State, I majored in art and was mentored by Charles Gaines, now a respected international artist. I also explored diverse interests through courses in history, the natural sciences, dance, theater crafts. I didn’t finish my degree, electing instead to relocate to San Francisco in 1971, where I enjoyed living in the Haight-Ashbury and became a part of the free-spirit, experimental and artistic culture of the day. I moved to the Mission District forty years ago and love the diversity and vibe of this neighborhood.
After years dedicated to oil painting, I transitioned to photography, finding creative fulfillment while engaging more directly with the world. Recently, a desire to explore feelings and perceptions through line, color and texture led me back to drawing. Seeking to avoid the accumulation of physical materials, I embraced the digital realm, using the Procreate app and Apple Pencil to create directly on my iPad. I committed to a daily practice of at least one drawing. What began as a creative pursuit has unexpectedly become a daily spiritual practice, enriching my understanding and appreciation for the life I experience each day.
I am still painting outside the lines. I hope my work has some meaning for you.
